How many VLANs does the HP ProCurve 2848 support?

By default, the number of supported VLANs on the HP ProCurve 2848 switch is set to 8. However, you can set the limit of supported VLANs to up to 256 using the switch configuration via telnet.

Here’s how you can easily change this value using telnet:

• Connect to the switch via telnet [switch ip address].
• Enter the menu mode using menu
• Navigate to 2. Switch Configuration using the arrow keys and press Return.

• Navigate to 8. VLAN menu using the arrow keys and press Return.

• Navigate to 1. VLAN support using the arrow keys and press Return.

• Select Edit using the arrow keys and press Return.

• Enter 256 (this will overwrite the default of value of 8) and press Return.

• Select Save using the arrow keys and press Return.

• Select Return to Main Menu using the arrow keys and press Return. Notice that the 1. VLAN support value indicates with a * that the value has been changed and it needs a reboot to activate the changes.

• Select 6. Reboot Switch using the arrow keys and press Return.

• Press Y to select Yes to confirm the reboot and press Return to confirm.

The switch will tell you Rebooting the System and reboot accordingly. After the reboot, you can verify that the number of supported VLANs has been changed to 256 by entering the menu again and navigating to 8. VLAN menu and then 1. VLAN support.
