What is 'Group 1' and 'Group 2' according to EN55011 / CISPR11
- Group 1 are devices which do not intentionally generate radio frequency energy (
9kHz to 400 GHz) (in FCC speak: unintentional radiators) ** Group 2 are devices which intentionally generate radio frequency energy (9kHz to 400 GHz) (in FCC speak: intentional radiators)
Note that it’s not about generating radio frequency energy, not using RF energy - according to Annex A, a frequency counter is a Group 1 device.
If a device uses the frequencies just internally, without any kind of RF transmission, coupling etc, it is still classified as Group 1.
In other words, every device that has a transmitter, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, DECT, NFC, RFID, cellular modems (2G/3G/4G/5G), etc. is classified as Group 2.
All other devices, such as industrial equipment, medical devices, household appliances, lighting equipment, etc. which do not have any kind of radio transmitter are classified as Group 1.
