The RC time constant, denoted by the Greek letter $\tau$, represents the time it takes for the voltage across a capacitor to reach approximately 63.2% of its final value when charging, or to decay to approximately 36.8% when discharging.
$$ \tau = R \times C $$where $R$ is the resistance in ohms and $C$ is the capacitance in farads. The result is in seconds.
